Ovarian Morphology in Girls (OMG!) Study Summary
1) What questions were the authors asking?
First, the authors wanted to explain the study they were doing. Then, the authors looked at part of the data to ask two questions. First, the authors wanted to see if abdominal (or tummy) ultrasound scans of the ovaries were clear so the authors could look at unique features of the ovaries like how big an ovary is or how many follicles an ovary has in it. Second, they wanted to see if those features of the ovaries were related to hormone levels in blood. They were very interested in the hormones that are different in PCOS.
2) What did they do to ask research questions?
They conducted ultrasound scans of the ovaries in teens who were within one year of their very first period (also called menarche). They also took blood samples.
3) What did they find?
First, the authors show that they can see ovaries using tummy ultrasound. Second, they found relationships between features of the ovaries were related to hormones. The hormones were ones that are also different in PCOS.
4) Why are these findings important?
PCOS is a disease that is hard to diagnose. PCOS can develop in teens, but often people are diagnosed when they are adults. The authors are doing this study to try and find early signs of PCOS so that we can diagnose it sooner.
